We Don't Have A TV, I Am Serious!

What are your thoughts about the TV? Have they changed any if you are a parent?

When we moved to Connecticut we had the intention of buying a new TV. We sold our old one to a friend so we could buy a new one after we moved.

My husband then decided that maybe we should try to see how long we could go without a TV. We live in the country and he thought maybe we would all benefit without a TV. We did not watch the Olympics, we checked a few articles online but did not miss a wink of sleep.

I never watched much TV growing up, my parents didn't watch much either so it is fine with me. I was shocked that my husband was okay with it, you know how men need their TV's! I was up to the challenge and now it's been almost FIVE months since we have had a TV. The neatest part is with the boys. I can tell a huge difference with them. Their attention spans and love for the outdoors are so much greater now that we don't own a TV. We did get a new laptop about a month ago and the boys can watch movies on it if they want to. Thank goodness or I would never have time to clean! We are going to try to make it until January without a TV and then we will need to reevaluate because the next season of 24 will be showing.
And we all know that if Jack is back, it changes everything!

Hey friend! I was thinking about you today! When I saw that you had posted I was so excited! I hope yall are doing well. We have the womens retreat this weekend and I so wish you could come!!!!!!
Anyway in regards to TV. We dont have one. Well let me rephrase that. We have one, but it only gets local stations (with bunny ears and foil) it can play dvds and it is located upstairs so it is often forgotten.
WE LOVE IT. It is there if we need a little comic relief or if i need to clean but as for sitting around watching it, it doesnt usually happen. (except i will say we watched our share of olympics into the wee hours of the night)
I realized last Halloween when we all went up stairs to watch Charlie Brown's Halloween Special that Titus NEVER sees advertisements or commercials so when he did it was a love/hate relationship. At first he didnt understand why they kept stopping the show (because he only ever watches DVDs or episodes on nickjr.com)but then he started asking for, infact demanding the need for, the toys that were advertised! I could NOT believe how well the advertisements worked after only a 30min program!!!! it was quite funny and after that we decided that battle wasnt worth spending time around the tv.
At any rate, yall will make the best descion for your family i am sure of it!
miss you!

Great job!!! I know it would be a challenge!!! I especially understand the movies and cleaning thing! Hahaha! If I had to choose between internet and tv though, I would say internet!!! :) I think it's a sort of connection to the outside world that this stay at home momma needs! :) Can't wait to see what you decide! :)

Ok, we don't have tv either. I mean, we have one but only movies are watched on it. But I wanted to tell you...we're HUGE 24 fans and we watch all of the episodes online and it's been great! They're not on there until the next day after they air, so we have to wait until Tuesdays, but we like it. There are a few dramas we like that are online. Just check out fox.com for 24 episodes!

Hey, I'm friends with Becky and clicked on your blog thinking it was Steph's. BUT, I saw you are living in CT. Me and my husband lived there for 2 years and loved it. We were in Milford and went to Calvary Evangelical Free Church, just incase you haven't found one yet. We met the most amazing couple friends there and were so blessed by friends of all ages. Hope you are enjoying fall. Take your boys to Essex where they can ride on a real old fashion steam train through the foilage and at Christmas, Santa Claus reads the Polar Express on it....ahhh I miss it. okay, sorry for so much info from a stranger! :)

Congrats on no tv! We went without a tv for a few months when we moved into our new house. We figured it was a good transitional time to not get cable installed. It worked great until dh and I were trying to watch movies and having to cart the tv in and out of the garage! LOL So now we have it set up in the living room...still with no cable but available for movies or cartoon dvds for the kids. It really does change your life, doesn't it?

As of this month I have been without a TV for one full year. I LOVE it. I am reading a lot more and finally found out that there are all kinds of books and artwork I love to spend my time with.

Best of all, I am sitting out the presidential election histrionics our country always goes through -- at least on TV -- during election years. (And yes, I did vote -- took advantage of early voting.) I DO have a computer and if I want to watch a DVD I can do that on my computer. Otherwise, I just watch bits of You Tube from time to time or something on hulu.com. I love not having a TV for many reasons, but I think the main reason is that TV is used in such a manipulative way. They don't call it "programming" for nothing! I did have a TV when my son was growing up but he never got into heavy TV watching. I know it's "okay" to have a TV too. For me, I'm better off without one.
